Introduction

King is a township in York Region, north of Vaughan, next to Richmond Hill, Aurora and Newmarket to the east. It is mostly countryside, with three main villages, King City, Nobleton and Schomberg, and several smaller hamlets, among them Ansnorveldt, Kettleby, Laskay, Lloydtown, Pottageville and Snowball.

The township was named by John Graves Simcoe after John King, a British under-secretary of state, and was surveyed in 1800. King Township was established on January 1, 1850. Its early settlements grew around grist mills and sawmills.

Real estate overview

About a third of King Township is in the Greenbelt and about two thirds is on the Oak Ridges Moraine, where provincial plans protect the land. Most new homes are built inside the three villages, which are the township's settlement areas and have municipal water and sewers. Outside the villages and hamlets, the land is mostly farms, forests and equestrian properties.

  • Nobleton. A village in the southwest of the township, where King Road crosses Highway 27, surrounded by rolling countryside and horse farms. Cold Creek Conservation Area is nearby.
  • Schomberg. A village in the north of the township, near Highway 27 and Highway 9, with a historic Main Street of shops and restaurants. Main Street hosts a Christmas celebration on the first Saturday of December and the yearly Schomberg Agricultural Fair.
  • The Holland Marsh. A protected specialty crop area in the north of the township, farmed for vegetables.
